An electric gate service is essential to ensure that your automatic gate operates smoothly, safely, and efficiently. In the UK, regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs, enhance the gate's lifespan, and ensure compliance with safety standards.

At Jacksons, we not only design, manufacture, and install electric gates, but we offer electric gate servicing too. We offer service plans to suit any installation, takeover and upgrading of existing installations (subject to survey), comprehensive technical support, and breakdown services. By taking out a service plan, you’re provided with peace of mind alongside prolonged life of your electric gate, trouble free operation, and above all, safety.

Here's what typically happens during an electric gate service, how often it should be done, and the common issues that may arise from a gate that is not regularly serviced, was poorly installed, or made from low quality materials.

What happens during an electric gate service?

During an electric gate service, a professional gate technician will conduct a series of checks and maintenance tasks to ensure the gate’s functionality and safety. These checks include:

Inspection of the gate mechanism

This includes inspecting the gate motor and mechanical parts of the gate. The engineer will ensure the motor is running efficiently, with no signs of wear or damage. This includes checking the power supply and the mechanism that opens and closes the gate. A key part of a gate service involves the lubrication of moving parts. All moving parts that require lubrication, including hinges, rollers, and motors, will be oiled to prevent rust and wear.

Testing the gate safety features

Electric gates must comply with UK safety standards, in particular the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008. The technician will test the safety features, such as obstruction detection sensors (safety photocells) and emergency stop systems.

They’ll ensure the gate’s operation is safe for pedestrians and vehicles, checking if the gate stops when obstructed and if the safety edges and sensors are functioning correctly.

All devices and warning signs will also be inspected at this stage to ensure they are fully operational and clearly visible.

Inspection of the electrical system

The gate engineer will inspect the wiring, control panels, and any backup power supplies to ensure they are in good condition and there are no risks of electrical faults.

The control board will be checked for any error codes or malfunctioning components and the control cabinet will also be checked to make sure it is still weatherproof and lockable.

Remote and access control check

The service includes testing the remote controls, keypads, or intercom systems, ensuring they’re responsive and functioning properly.

Batteries for remotes and the access control system will also be tested or replaced if necessary.

Structural check

The technician will check the gate’s physical condition for any signs of rust, damage, or misalignment that could affect its operation. This also includes ensuring the gate is securely mounted with no loose fixings.

Testing the gate's operation

After servicing, the gate is typically tested several times to ensure it opens and closes smoothly, aligns correctly, and operates without issues.

It will also be checked that the operator of the gate has a clear and unobstructed view of the gate, which extends to all its operations.

Updating the Customer

A summary of any necessary repairs or adjustments to the automated gate will be provided to the customer.

This process is similar to a car MOT, where advisories are discussed alongside any urgent repairs that require immediate attention.

Electric gate problems

What can go wrong with an electric gate? Here we look at some common issues that can occur with an electric gate and why it’s best to have it regularly serviced.

  • Mechanical failures, such as hinge, track, or motor issues
  • Electrical issues, such as power supply problems and wiring issues
  • Control system malfunctions, including remote control or keypad issues, sensor problems, or programming errors
  • Wear and tear, such as rollers and bearings, chains and belt drive issues
  • Rust and corrosion which can affect key metal components
  • Obstructions like dirt, debris, or vegetation in the gate’s path
  • Damage caused by a vehicle collision with the gate can result in potential issues, and it is not uncommon for the owner to be unaware that the collision has taken place.
  • Weather conditions can also affect gates, which we look into more closely here:

Electric gate not working after rain?

Electric gates may fail to work after rain due to several potential issues, mostly related to water ingress or increased humidity affecting the gate's electrical or mechanical components. Here are common reasons and their explanations:

  • Water ingress into electrical components which can damage the wiring, control panel, and motor
  • Moisture, humidity, and condensation can effect sensors and photocells and sealed components
  • Physical obstructions such as debris and leaves in the gate track, or swollen timber used in wooden gates due to humidity can obstruct movement
  • Power supply issues from tripped breakers or damaged transformers
  • In addition to yearly servicing, be sure to clear out debris from the gate track and hinges while the gate is turned off.

Electric gate not working after ice or snow?

In the UK, snow is relatively rare and often catches us off guard. If your electric gate isn’t functioning, the issue might be due to something simple:

  • Snow or Ice on Sensors: This is one of the most common causes. A straightforward solution is to carefully wipe away any snow or ice from the sensors, which may immediately resolve the problem.
  • Water Ingress: Like rain, melted snow or ice can seep into electrical components, potentially damaging wiring, control panels, motors, sensors, photocells, or even sealed components.
  • Physical obstructions caused by snow or ice: Snow or ice could create a physical blockage, preventing the gate from operating. It might also inadvertently trigger any sensors, causing a fault.
  • Human error can also pay a big part in the safety and longevity of your electric gate. A poorly installed gate can lead to alignment issues or mechanical stress. This is why we do not supply electric gate kits for DIY installations. Additionally, as previously mentioned, a collision with a vehicle could also be a contributing factor.

    Electric gate repair

Electric gate repairs can cost a significant amount unless the gate is covered under a service plan, not to mention inconvenience and security issues if the gate is stuck in position. In addition, replacement parts may need to be sourced, which is why choosing a British gate manufacturer can help reduce stress and delays.

Above all, a gate servicing plan helps to relieve these issues, knowing that regular maintenance is keeping your gate in top condition.

At Jacksons, our gate automation solutions may be priced higher than some alternatives, but reliability and safety remain our unwavering priorities. We use only high-quality, thoroughly tested components that ensure exceptional performance and long-lasting durability.

Electric gates are often chosen for their ability to deliver seamless security and convenience. However, a malfunction - whether leaving the gate stuck open, jeopardising the safety and security of your home, or stuck closed, causing significant disruption - can quickly become a major source of stress.

With Jacksons, you not only gain the peace of mind that comes from investing in dependable, high-quality products, but also the reassurance of support from a company with decades of expertise in gate automation, proudly serving customers since 1947.
