A well-designed garden room can transform an underused outdoor space into a stylish and functional retreat. Brian, a long-standing Jacksons Fencing customer, achieved this by incorporating woven fence panel, a pergola structure, and complementary garden gates to create a beautiful and private space beside his home. From the outside, Brian’s home is framed by striking Jacksons Brook double-leaf gates, providing security while maintaining an elegant aesthetic. Peeking through the entrance, visitors get a glimpse of the inviting space beyond a cleverly designed garden room with fencing and a pergola.
Initially, Brian envisioned using the side area of his house as a covered space by installing a sloping roof supported by Jacksons wooden fence posts, similar to a carport.
Realising the potential of the space, Brian opted to enclose it using Jacksons woven fence panels. These panels not only offer privacy but also create a stylish and contemporary look. Having seen them at our show gardens, Brian was drawn to their aesthetic appeal and later discovered an unexpected benefit:
“I fell in love with the woven panels because of their good looks, but I love them even more now because of how the sunlight filters through the timber slats, creating beautiful light and shadow patterns in the morning.”
Brian’s next step is to remove a large brick porch that currently juts into the garden room, further opening up the area and making it even more spacious and versatile. His project demonstrates how smart fencing choices, combined with creative thinking, can turn an overlooked space into a valuable outdoor retreat.

Brian’s plan hit a snag because he was suddenly taken in to hospital before he could complete the work, but help was at hand - a local Jacksons fence Installer, Derek Burr brought his project to completion. So when Brian was well enough he could continue by making the most of the room by laying an attractive path from recycled materials; steel edging strips, pavers and slate chips.
He has also ‘greened up’ the area considerably with bamboos, climbers and numerous other plants. A bistro table and chairs provide a lovely spot to have breakfast, or a quiet read. And a chiminea provides a heat source to extend the area’s usefulness, when the evenings turn a bit chillier.
